All,
I've just installed PADS version 9.4. I am unable to edit/change any parts in the decal editor.
Open PADS, open library, select a Decal and select Edit.
After part opens, select a terminal, then right click and select Pad stack. BOOM! every time on every part I've tried.
Is anyone else seeing this problem? Do I have an installation error or is PADS itself hosed...
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Wayne.
PS Thanks mentor for the continually changing color schemes...really? Does that constitute an update these days? Just wondering.... ![]()
If you do not have advanced rules you can not use 9.4 it crashs the decal editor.
Looks like they don't want us guys with the cheap seats migrating to 9.4 eh?
Wow, if this really is the issue, I also guess they didn't have anyone with cheap seats beta test it.
All,
We did confim this defect, and it is as described below - it will effect those licenses without the Advanced Rule Set option.
Engineering is working on a fix now. Once I get a timeframe of when it will get posted, I'll let you know.
I apologize, and we'll get it fixed asap!
Jim
Any chance of an approximate time frame?
I need to weigh doing a version roll-back versus waiting for this fix...
Wayne.
Try the SDD configurator
WOW!!! This is a pretty major bug to make it out into
released code......
Takes my confidence down a couple notches for sure.
PADS Community,
This is clearly a defect that should have been caught before we shipped. We will resolve the defect with the highest level of urgency. We don't yet have a schedule, but it typically takes slightly more than a week to create, test and issue an update.
Over the last couple years, we improved our development processes and regression testing. With this exception, we have realized positive results. We will redouble our efforts and regain your confidence.
Regards,
Mike
So....
If I decide to uninstall version 9.4 and 9.3.1 was previously installed, will PADS revert to 9.3.1?
Should I use the windows uninstall or the PADS uninstall? When I installed 9.4 I used the PADS uninstall to remove the earlier copies (9.2) on other machines and unfortunately it removed all copies of PADS (including 9.4)
Since I am reverting to 9.3.1 is there some way to ensure that my settings are retained? Is there a folder in the structure that stores this information that I can copy and paste into the version I want to use?
Wayne.
You should be using the configurator, IMO; not un-installing.
Use the Migrate Settings tool to migrate settings to new versions.
I used the configurator to migrate settings to the new version then uninstalled the prior versions...that's when it dumped everything. It is "supposed to" only remove the past installations.
Can you use the configurator to migrate settings to a prior revision? Typically it's used to move to newer not older versions.
I tried running 9.3.1 on my machine (where the prior installations were not removed) with 9.4 still on it. It's looking like it will require me to remove 9.4 or at least reinstall 9.3.1...I'm hoping to not lose settings when I do that.
Sadly this was the one time we decided to install the new software without trying it on a test platform first...shame on me I know. Go figure this would be the crash and burn and lose days version of the software...grrr.
I also had to uninstall 9.4 but the uninstall feature has been removed from the installer. I called Tech Support and here is what they told me:
In a Command Prompt Window, go to the folder that has the configurator.exe in it.
For example, cd C:\MentorGraphics\win32
Then do configurator.exe -clean
When that completes, delete the PADS9.4 folder.
Thanks, that was quite helpful. 9.4 does something weird to the uninstaller we discovered - which is why when we ran the initial 9.4 install and then ran the uninstaller to remove prior versions it deleted the 9.4 version...hopefully they'll fix that "minor" issue as well.
Remember to export any designs "touched" by 9.4. Older version won't recognize the file. Doing an Export and saving the asc as a 9.3 file solves this.
Extremely frustrating this has been...2 full days down the drain...wonder if PADS has a "we hosed you and now we'll reimburse you" policy?....
Interesting.....
unknowing customers can still dowload and install?!!?
...wonder if PADS has a "we hosed you and now we'll reimburse you" policy?....
Of course they do. On a related note, there's a report that gas is going to go back down to 26¢ a gallon, and it's raining candy and beer, and there are little fairies flitting about your garden....

Phew, so glad to hear about the policies realities...
Out of curiosity...what kind of beer?

The defect has been confirmed as DR 873769. If you do not have the Advanced Rules Set (ARS) option, the system will crash if you attempt to open the Padstack dialog in the Decal Editor.
If you have ARS, this defect will not affect you.
A version of PADS with this defect fixed is expected to be available on SupportNet within a week.
For more information about this issue, see TechNote MG571618
.
We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused, and commit to improving our development process and restoring your confidence in us.
Jim
Oops! The TechNote Jim meant to point to is actually MG571618.
To revert to 9.3.1 is the the worst for the customers.
Would it not be better to give all the customers a temporary license for the ARS ?
Then the user don't have to uninstall the 9.4.
Just my 2 cents......
We considered this action. However, issuing temporary licenses could result in rules created (possibly accidentally) that would not be editable later.
I assure you (all) that we are concentrating all available resources on solving the problem and re-issuing the release as soon as possible - hopefully in a few days. We have already put additional tests and process improvements in place.
Thanks again.
Mike
You know...in the real-world environment where a customer is held less captive to his product than in this case (we are tied to Mentor unless we want to expend a whole lot of effort and cost - which is starting to look very appealing by the way) there would be serious issues in the way this has been dealt with.
I have little doubt Mentor has been working hard to fix the problem. I have no doubt there were (or will be) lots of meetings to figure out how this got missed. I have no doubt processes and controls, checks and balances will all be adjusted, changed, added to, etc. to ensure something like this doesn't happen again.
What has been left out in all of this is the customer...you know, the guy actually footing the bill for all this...
PADs is a spendy piece of software - pretty good in my opinion - and a faulty piece of software was produced. "We're going to fix it" is the response...well, I certainly hope so. In the meantime, the original download is still available with no warning that there might be an issue (that I'm aware of). Aside from assurances that "all available resources" are being thrown at it and that it will be a few days, there has been zero update information. Where is customer service here? We don't have the full suite so we are chopped liver?
Even the basic user pays large sums of money annually for support (read: customer service) and I would have expected a bit more communication on the part of Mentor Graphics.
Rolling the PADs version back a rev is time consuming on roughly 8-10 computers...my IT guy doesn't just sit around waiting for me to give him things to do. We've held off on migrating some of the machines backward but I can't wait any longer. If I knew the release was around the corner (literally not just imaginatively) I would wait a bit more, but I can't do that.
I guess the point of this rant is this: Mentor, you've done a poor job of communicating with your customer base. To say I'm frustrated and dissappointed is an understatement. To handle the situation in the vacuous (sp?) manner you have could not do a better job of telling your low-end user customers that, "you're not that important...just wait longer". Customer service is what keeps a customer your customer, even when things like this happen. This is a fine example of helping your customers make the decision to look around at alternatives a bit more seriously.
Having said that...could we possibly...just possibly, get some kind of realistic, "here's how it going" or "we expect to release an update on x-day"?
PS. I would never get away with this with my customers. We've had issues with our product and have always sought to fix the issue while at the same time giving the customer real projected end dates. While in the fix process we are constantly in communication with them. Our customers remain happy with us and are please with our customer service. Just an FYI.
BREAKING NEWS
*******I see in the last few minutes Version 9.4 has finally been removed from the download page.**********
Wayne,
We expect to have an updated release available for download by the end of the week.
A letter was sent to users who downloaded the release and note posted on SupportNet last week. We were slow in retracting the release from SupportNet and wil fix that process.
Sincerely,
Mike
I found a flaw in your notification system. I didn't download the update (it takes hours). I requested a CD (or DVD nowadays). I didn't get the letter you mentioned. I only know about the fix because I frequent this forum. I just paid over $8,000 in annual maintenance fees and I'm pretty upset. You changed the install program. It installed PADs in the wrong directory (I wasn't offered a choice of destinations this time), then I discovered that the Uninstall feature doesn't work anymore. After a call to Tech Support, I had to manually delete it in DOS, then reinstall in the correct directory. I lost several hours work. I also put it on several other machines, now all of them are unusable unless I manually uninstall it there as well. It reminds me of all the crashes we were having right after PADs was bought by Mentor. Please don't make changes to the code. PADs is just a tool for us, not the latest geek app. We want it to work every day, the same way. I wouldn't expect to have to relearn how to use a hammer every few months or to have it suddenly be unable to hammer in a nail.
9.4 has not been removed contrary to popular thought. At the top of this very discussion forum is a banner that reads that 9.4 is now available. Follow the link so nicely offered there and you get information on the update (excepting certain appropo info). The information page then offers another link to the download and voila, there is 9.4 beaming brightly for download with no warning, no hint of the dangers that lurk in the shallow end of the pool.
paceto, I ran into exactly the same issues as you did trying to remove it, then re-installing prior version and updates and updates and updates just to get a working copy of PADs again. I agree, don't change the code. It seems every update introduces new problems/errors that were not there before. I could list a few but I think we're all familiar with them. A simple request which I think would line up with paceto and probably most of the users. Updates are nice and improvements to the program are nice. Don't hose the parts that already work well.
As a last note....a letter went out to all who downloaded the update? Really? It must have gone Postal Service via Siberia because I've yet to see it...thus the comments on frustration and lack of communication.
Goodness! That's embarassing. I didn't realize that banner was even there. It's gone now. Better late than never, I hope.... Thanks for the ping.
As for the letter, it was sent via email on March 15 to everyone who had downloaded the release.
-Cathy
That's funny... I'm a downloader, but I apparently didn't make the list. Who else had this problem?
PADS 9.4.1 is now available for download from SupportNet.
If you have previously installed PADS 9.4, please read TechNote MG572385.
Jim Martens pointed out that the defect did not affect those of us with ARS. If we have ARS, do we need to install 9.4.1? Or were there other issues addressed with this release?
This is correct. If you have ARS, you are unaffected.
PADS 9.4.1 corrects the one defect (described above), and is now available for download (it is a full install).
Jim
There is a probelm in 9.3.1 with fatal errors occurring in decal editor. It is random but does occur usually when you are editing multiple decals.
