PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

All,

I've just installed PADS version 9.4.  I am unable to edit/change any parts in the decal editor.

Open PADS, open library, select a Decal and select Edit.

After part opens, select a terminal, then right click and select Pad stack.  BOOM! every time on every part I've tried.

Is anyone else seeing this problem?  Do I have an installation error or is PADS itself hosed...

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Wayne.

PS  Thanks mentor for the continually changing color schemes...really?  Does that constitute an update these days?  Just wondering....

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

If you do not have advanced rules you can not use 9.4 it crashs the decal editor.

Looks like they don't want us guys with the cheap seats migrating to 9.4 eh?

Wow, if this really is the issue, I also guess they didn't have anyone with cheap seats beta test it.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

All,

We did confim this defect, and it is as described below - it will effect those licenses without the Advanced Rule Set option.

Engineering is working on a fix now.  Once I get a timeframe of when it will get posted, I'll let you know.

I apologize, and we'll get it fixed asap!

WOW!!! This is a pretty major bug to make it out into

released code......

Takes my confidence down a couple notches for sure.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

PADS Community,

This is clearly a defect that should have been caught before we shipped.  We will resolve the defect with the highest level of urgency.  We don't yet have a schedule, but it typically takes slightly more than a week to create, test and issue an update.

Over the last couple years, we improved our development processes and regression testing.  With this exception, we have realized positive results.  We will redouble our efforts and regain your confidence.

Regards,

Mike

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

You should be using the configurator, IMO; not un-installing.

Use the Migrate Settings tool to migrate settings to new versions.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

I also had to uninstall 9.4 but the uninstall feature has been removed from the installer. I called Tech Support and here is what they told me:

In a Command Prompt Window, go to the folder that has the configurator.exe in it.

For example, cd C:\MentorGraphics\win32

Then do configurator.exe   -clean

When that completes, delete the PADS9.4 folder.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

...wonder if PADS has a "we hosed you and now we'll reimburse you" policy?....

Of course they do. On a related note, there's a report that gas is going to go back down to 26¢ a gallon, and it's raining candy and beer, and there are little fairies flitting about your garden....

Why, your favorite, of course.

Negra Modello and Newcatle Brown Ale are what's coming down in my yard.  Those bottles hurt though...

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor - Update

The defect has been confirmed as DR 873769.  If you do not have the Advanced Rules Set (ARS) option, the system will crash if you attempt to open the Padstack dialog in the Decal Editor.

If you have ARS, this defect will not affect you.

A version of PADS with this defect fixed is expected to be available on SupportNet within a week.

We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused, and commit to improving our development process and restoring your confidence in us.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor - Update

To revert to 9.3.1 is the the worst for the customers.

Would it not be better to give all the customers a temporary license for the ARS ?
Then the user don't have to uninstall the 9.4.

Just my 2 cents......

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor - Update

We considered this action.  However, issuing temporary licenses could result in rules created (possibly accidentally) that would not be editable later.

I assure you (all) that we are concentrating all available resources on solving the problem and re-issuing the release as soon as possible - hopefully in a few days.  We have already put additional tests and process improvements in place.

Thanks again.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

Wayne,

We expect to have an updated release available for download by the end of the week.

A letter was sent to users who downloaded the release and note posted on SupportNet last week.  We were slow in retracting the release from SupportNet and wil fix that process.

Sincerely,

Mike

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

I found a flaw in your notification system. I didn't download the update (it takes hours). I requested a CD (or DVD nowadays). I didn't get the letter you mentioned. I only know about the fix because I frequent this forum. I just paid over $8,000 in annual maintenance fees and I'm pretty upset. You changed the install program. It installed PADs in the wrong directory (I wasn't offered a choice of destinations this time), then I discovered that the Uninstall feature doesn't work anymore. After a call to Tech Support, I had to manually delete it in DOS, then reinstall in the correct directory. I lost several hours work. I also put it on several other machines, now all of them are unusable unless I manually uninstall it there as well. It reminds me of all the crashes we were having right after PADs was bought by Mentor. Please don't make changes to the code. PADs is just a tool for us, not the latest geek app. We want it to work every day, the same way. I wouldn't expect to have to relearn how to use a hammer every few months or to have it suddenly be unable to hammer in a nail.

Goodness! That's embarassing. I didn't realize that banner was even there. It's gone now. Better late than never, I hope.... Thanks for the ping.

As for the letter, it was sent via email on March 15 to everyone who had downloaded the release.

PADS 9.4.1 is now available for download from SupportNet.

If you have previously installed PADS 9.4, please read TechNote MG572385.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

Jim Martens pointed out that the defect did not affect those of us with ARS. If we have ARS, do we need to install 9.4.1? Or were there other issues addressed with this release?

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

This is correct.  If you have ARS, you are unaffected.

PADS 9.4.1 corrects the one defect (described above), and is now available for download (it is a full install).

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

There is a probelm in 9.3.1 with fatal errors occurring in decal editor. It is random but does  occur usually when you are editing multiple decals.

Re: PADS Fatal Runtime Error in parts editor

I have 9.4. Recently I had to reinstall due to a HD crash.

Now, I am getting the Fatal Error... message just about every time I edit a footprint. Curious, it didn't seem unstable when I first reinstalled a couple of weeks ago. Just in the past few days this is happening.

Before the HD crash I was running the same version and didn't have these errors (at least not very often).

This is critical for me at this point because it looks like I may not be able to use the decal editor at all right now.

Can anyone comment on what may fix this issue?

I am not under service contract any more, so I can't install beyond 9.4 as far as I know. And installing an older version is probably NOT an option, because i have way too many designs that were done with 9.4.

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

Run Configurator and then try it again.  that appears to be the way Mentor fixes their registrty issues.

Since you were entitled to PADS 9.4.1 when you were under maintenance we can provide you with a link to download the PADS 9.4.1 install.  I will send you a direct email with a link you will be able to access.
