PADS9.4 introduces functionality to control PADS Suite license consumption

Version 1

PADS 9.4 Layout, Logic, and Router, delivers new functionality which enables a user to pick a specific PADS Suite (composite) license to checkout. See further below for a demonstration and instructions.

Does this functionality apply to me?

Yes, but only if the following is true:

    • You have network/floating licenses (do NOT use this functionality if you have only nodelocked/mobile compute licenses)

    AND

    • You have a mix of different PADS Suite (composite) licenses, OR, a mix of Suite and Kit (atomic/unbundled) licenses
      • Examples include:
        • PADS ES (padses_c) AND PADS LS (padsls_c) Suite licenses
        • PADS ES (padses_c) Suite license, AND a PADS 065 Kit (contains pwrshell and many other "pwr..." licenses)

    Instructions:

    • In PADS Layout, Logic, or Router, navigate to the Help > Installed Options... menu selection
    • Click the Suite Configuration button in the bottom left corner of the dialog
    • Click the Control suite license checkout and select from the following list: checkbox
    • Click on one or more PADS Suite licenses from the list, and click Apply
      • Make sure you select any appropriate checkboxes under the Copy selections to area in the bottom right corner of the dialog.
      • To checkout only Kit/unbundled (atomic) licenses - and ignore all suite licenses - uncheck all of the suites in the list.

Warning: To use this functionality it is  imperative that you remove any FlexNet Options files and/or batch script  customization that might have been used for PADS9.3.1 and older releases (refer to Controlling license consumption in the PADS Flow using the FlexNet Options file); otherwise it will not work correctly (refer to Unexpected demo mode or MGLS EXCLUDE errors in the Installed Options and Suite Configuration dialogs for the error messages you might expect to see).

What about DxDesigner and other applications in the PADS Flow?

This integrated solution only applies to PADS Layout, Logic, and Router, at this time. For DxDesigner and other applications that may be part of the PADS Suite licenses that you own, refer to VBScript technique for controlling which floating license gets checked out for a scripted approach which may help to control consumption. Please note: Do not mix the use of these techniques for the same application, otherwise you will run into licensing problems.

    Sample use cases:

    License server contains licenses for:

    • 1 x PADS CR-L Suite (padscrl_c)
    • 1 x PADS ES Suite (padses_c)
    • 1 x PADS LS Suite (padsls_c)
    • 1 x DxDesigner 040 (dxdesigner040_c)
    • 1 x PADS 065 Kit (pwrshell + many other "pwr..." licenses)
    • 1 x Advanced Packaging Toolkit option license (pwradvpkgtool)

Also, 2 users have their own dedicated nodelocked uncounted license (a.k.a. "mobile compute") for 1 x PADS ES Suite (padses_c), and therefore don't need to access the license server.

    Use case #1

User with one of the nodelocked licenses wants to continue using PADS like he or she has with prior versions of PADS:

    • Leave the PADS Suite Configuration dialog in its default state
      • The Control suite license checkout and select from the following list: checkbox is unchecked

    Use case #2

User wants to consume the PADS ES Suite license (padses_c) from the server, leaving the other Suite and Kit licenses for other users:

    • In the PADS Suite Configuration dialog:
      • Check only the Control suite license checkout and select from the following list: checkbox
      • Select the PADS ES Suite (padses_c) checkbox under the Suite Name heading
      • Click Apply to consume the padses_c license
      • Click OK to exit the dialog

    Use case #3

User wants to consume the PADS 065 Kit licenses (pwrshell + many other "pwr..." licenses) from the server, leaving all the Suite licenses for other users:

    • In the PADS Suite Configuration dialog:
      • Check the Control suite license checkout and select from the following list: checkbox
      • Uncheck ALL checkboxes under the Suite Name heading
      • Click Apply to consume only the Kit (unbundled/option) licenses
      • Click OK to exit the dialog
