    Border Symbol Dissappears from list when symbol edited

    vandel

      I have been tearing my hair out trying to get basic editing of standard borders to work and reading between the lines on various posts here to achieve my goal.

      So far it seems that even though the symbols in Common library appear to have attributes such as Author defined, they really aren't really defined and that another step is needed to add the Author attribute to the standard .prp file using Tools -> Property Definition Editor is required.  Also once that is done there is some combinationation of check boxes that need to be set in the symbol itself to actually get the attribute to be recognized as editable.

      There is a post in here entitled  Re: Defining border attributes and border.ini file location

      That attempts to address this but falls short of a step by step discussion of what is actually happenign and what must be done to succeed.  This also leaves the reader on their own if they are trying to determine hwo to set and update the @ parameters.

      With all that said, The actual question I have is I am able to now change the Author property and display the modified sheet, but the sheet no longer appears in the list of Border possibilities when you try to change Borders and if you change the Border in Settings ->Borders and Zones to something else, there is no way to set it back to the previous setting because it doesn't appear in the lists anymore. Specifically this occurs if you try to remove the MENTOR GRAPHICS text from common.bsheet.1 .  Once this is done and the symbol saved and Tools-> Update Symbols and Tools-> Update Other Objects Done, common:bsheet1 is missing from the possible Borders list ....

      If there is an actual step by step tutorial that doesn't gloss over steps or a description of operation that describes the way in which these lists are populated and the way the properties are processed I would be glad to be pointed to it and read it.

      If not, then any input into how to get the bsheet.1 back into the borders symbol list would be appreciated.  The symbol still appears in the library when view with Dx DataBook.

      Thanks for any help with this.

          Check your Preferences in the Symbol Editor and make sure the "auto update symbol outline" isn't set. And then adjust the symbol outline (the slashes) to be a very small square in the lower left.

            Thankyou for your comments regarding setting up borders, there is a section in the documentation that may help

            Building a Schematic > Schematic Sheet Customization > Schematic Sheet Borders. If not please let us know where it could be improved and we will get the documentation updated. As to the specific issues you raised with the original post:

            The pointer to the sample library did specify that the AUTHOR and REVISION properties would need to be added to the prp file if you carried them over: "the A1 Border for example has the @ properties plus AUTHOR and REVISION.  The latter two need to be added to the prp file to be used".

            This border symbol is intended as an example for the user to start with and to configure as he sees fit.

            Since this posting the methods have changed a little, particularly with updating the auto evaluated @ properties; perhaps it is time we updated the original post. I'll put it down on my 'to-do' list.

            If Shannon's post hasn't solved your issue then there are a couple of ways of working around this. We have seen this issue on occasions where the symbols don't appear in the list of available symbols, but have not pinned it down to any particular reason.

            If you cannot get the sheet name from the list you can edit the borders.ini file in a text editor, either in your template of in the project specific version of this file, the file is a simple list of sheet sizes and appropriate border symbols like:

            BSHEETL = Border:bsheet.1

            BSHEETP = Border:bsheet.2

            As a step by step guide:

            Creating border symbols:

            Define any user required properties in the appropriate property file using either the Property Definition Editor from Library Manager in the EE flow or from DxDesigner in the netlist flow (PADS or third party PCB layout).

            Add 'placeholders' for these properties in the border symbol.

            Ensure the border symbol's 'bounding box' is either a small rectangle at the bottom left corner of the sheet, or alternatively a narrow  rectangle across the bottom of the sheet. It should be out of the way of where you normally place objects in the schematic.

            Add the symbol to the Borders Section of the Settings Diaog - Setup - Settings - Borders and Zones. 'Border symbol for first sheet' and 'Border symbol for next sheet'.

            To automatically get these borders added to your sheets - Setup Settings - Schematic Editor - New Sheets - 'Automatically add the border to new schematic sheets' and 'Enable user-configurable border symbols'

            If the symbol doesn't appear as an option edit the borders.ini file directly as indicated above.

            In the Schematic:

            To update user defined border data - Setup -Settings - Borders and Zones - Border Properties - make the edits as appropriate to the values. Your user defined properties should appear in this dialog automatically. If they do  not then edit the project specific borders.ini file and add a section:

            [ATTRIBUTES}

            User def1

            User def2...

            Run Tools - Update - Other Objects - Properties. If you want to see the Print Order in the sheet border (@PRINTORDER) also check the Print Order option.

              Using

              Flow Id: PADS VX.2.2

              Full Flow Name: PADS VX.2.2

              SDD Platform: win32

              AHP Platform: win32

              I have this exact same problem where I create a Border symbol from scratch.

              New Border creation:

              Starting from an open project in PADS Designer >> Tools >> PADS Library tools >> Tools >> Symbol Editor >> File >> New Symbol >> (I Create Border Symbol) >> Save As >> Save to "Borders" Partition.

              Attempting to import the newly created Border:

              Starting from an open project in PADS Designer >> Right Click on the schematic sheet I want to add border to >> Change Border >> (Change Border Symbol window) click on "Borders" Partition in partition navigator >>... nothing, the newly created symbol does not show up.  I restarted PADS Designer.  Still nothing.

              More information

              The project is pointing to the correct "SL_borders.ini" file as well; I can update the "placeholders" variables via: (starting at PADS Designer) Setup >> Settings >> Borders and Zones >> Border Properties >> click on "B Portrait" (for example) >> Border Properties.  and I will see the "Designer", "Drawing Author", etc... fields update in the SL_borders.ini file in the project directory- which is an instance of a template file in the project directory I specify at the start of the project.

              in regards to modifying the SL_borders.ini file directly:

              "If you cannot get the sheet name from the list you can edit the borders.ini file in a text editor, either in your template of in the project specific version of this file, the file is a simple list of sheet sizes and appropriate border symbols like:

              BSHEETL = Border:bsheet.1

              BSHEETP = Border:bsheet.2"

              Those two lines are there in the SL_borders.ini file...not sure where to go from here..

                Check the partitions that hold the symbols are correct - sometimes it is Border, sometimes Borders. In PADS VX.2.2 we have introduced  Border as a symbol type, ensure the symbol is this type and not 'annotate'.

                Finally take a look here:

                Customizing sheet borders: Part 1

                Customizing sheet borders: Part 2

                Finally just try adding the symbol from the symbols view in Databook.
