Graphics cards validation for upcoming releases

    Rafal_Struzyk

With every release of our software we do our best to validate our graphics engine works as expected on a wide variety of cards and operating systems.

As part of this effort I’d like to ask you for your feedback and comments as to the following questions. It will help us fine tune our hardware base in preparation for the validation of our next major release.

      • Are you currently using (or planning to buy soon) workstation class graphics cards (like: NVidia Quadro, AMD FirePro) or consumer class cards (like: NVidia GeForce and AMD Radeon)?
      • When buying a card from a given class would you buy the low, middle or high end models?
        • Would ExpeditionPCB recommendations be the deciding factor when making a cost/benefit decision or do you use other tools that would move you up either way?
      • How often do you use a laptop/mobile graphics card and which vendor?
      • Are there any specific card families or models that you would like us to include in our testing?

To give you a feel of where we are today, we have these cards represented in our lab:

      • AMD
        • Workstation
          • FirePro V7900
          • FirePro V5900
        • Consumer
          • Radeon HD 5830
          • Radeon HD 5770
      • NVIDIA
        • Workstation
          • Quadro 2000
          • Quadro 600
          • Quadro FX3500
          • Quadro NVS295
        • Consumer
          • GeForce GTX460
          • GeForce 7600GT
      • Intel (laptops)

We are looking at potentially getting laptops/workstations with the NVIDIA Quadro K2000m/K2000 respectively. I was looking to see if anyone else has these to see what results they were getting.

          • Are you currently using (or planning to buy soon) workstation class graphics cards (like: NVidia Quadro, AMD FirePro) or consumer class cards (like: NVidia GeForce and AMD Radeon)? yes, planning to workstation class for laptop/workstations soon

            • Would ExpeditionPCB recommendations be the deciding factor when making a cost/benefit decision or do you use other tools that would move you up either way?

We are looking at getting a craphics card to last approx 4-5+ years. Mid-high end models that have the best cost benefit that our IT will be able to update drivers periodically for security purposes. Any recommendation from Mentor could sway our decision on new hardware.

          • How often do you use a laptop/mobile graphics card and which vendor?

VERY often, from NVIDIA. Some team members use a laptop exclusively.

          • Are there any specific card families or models that you would like us to include in our testing?

NVIDIA Quadro K2000m (laptop) / K2000 (workstation), some additional cards could be looked into soon. Testing should be done in a Windows 7/8 (64bit) environment.

Thanks for your feedback - we will buy the K2000 soon so it will be included in future release highlights and post here if we find something disturbing from an Expedition users perspective.

                • We use both workstation & consumer class cards : NVidia Quadro FX 3700 family as wel as NVidia GeForce 8500 GT family, all in HP Workstations.  Next to these we use quite some different models of portables (Thinkpads).
              • When buying a card from a given class would you buy the low, middle or high end models? We mostly by an all-in PC, from a trusted brand.
                • Would ExpeditionPCB recommendations be the deciding factor when making a cost/benefit decision or do you use other tools that would move you up either way?
                  • Mentors ExpeditionPCB recommendations have a huge impact on the cost/benefit decision.
              • How often do you use a laptop/mobile graphics card and which vendor?
                • laptops are very often used, some coworkers only use laptops : Lenovo Thinkpads
              • Are there any specific card families or models that you would like us to include in our testing?
                • our NVidia Quadro FX 3700 family is behaving strange with ExpeditionPC since some automatic updates, but we still have quite some NVidia GeForce 8x00 in older workstations, as these are expected to last 4 - 5 years.

                Thanks for your update.

As you probably have seen here or in our release highlights we have a Quadro FX3500 in our lab and we also test with an older GeForce 7600GT.

As to the NVidia Quadro issue you mention, before trouble shooting it too much please make sure to turn the global options in the NVidia control panel to the ones suggested by Jerry in this thread:

I have confirmed today that they also solve the driver on the newest K2000 cards (one just arrived in our lab).
