    Adding Planes

    bruce.northrop

      Hello All,

This isn't so much a PADS question, more layout in general.  I'm adding various power planes, some go thru the board on all layers, some do not.  For the ones that go thru the board, is it better practice to make all the edges line up or is is better to offset them slightly.  If they are lined up, it's a lot cleaner looking, but I'm wondering it there is any mechanical reasons to offset them.  Hopefully this makes sense.  Any thoughts?

      Thanks.

From the signal processing end I'd say don't overlap them if it isn't needed to avoid capacitive coupling between the planes.

I could see a weak point defined along the edge of the planes, but if that is an issue I expect there are larger problems of inadequate PCB support.  I expect 'aligned planes' is a non-issue.
