If you are using Variant Manager then the thread you looked at here https://communities.mentor.com/message/48595?et=watches.email.outcome#48595 or Variant Manager - Need parts to show up in schematic print but need to exclude them from Variant manager will probably answer your question. If you are not using Variant Manager then you need to use the Part List Exclude property and the Forward to PCB flag on the symbol/part to manage your excluded items. I used Variant manager and i got a better BOM. So i forward to PCB nothing change.
I used a vbs to create a assembly drawing with X for DNI component like show picture bellow. so component need add a Property is "Unplaced Symbol" with value is "DNI"
