Is it possible to snap to a Decal Drafting Element from within Layout?
Is it possible to obtain Properties of a Decal Drafting Element from within Layout?
I believe you can only snap to the decal origin from layout. The origin is the (0,0) position when in the Decal Editor.
In Layout, select a component, and then <right-click><Edit Decal> to bring up the Decal Editor so you can view/change the Decal elements.
Thank You for the response. I realize that you can open the decal to obtain information, but I was trying to avoid that. I was looking for specific information regarding a Decal Element as it relates to the PCB Database, not the Decal. For example: The location of a Decal element in the Y-Direction based on the PCB Database Origin.
You might be able to write a script to dig down that far. Why are you trying to do this?
I had an instance where I needed to place a component based on a component body. I ended up having to open the decal, get the properties, close the Decal, perform the math and move the component. It would have been much easier and simpler if I could have acquired the decal properties of the drafting element while I was in layout.
The most common ways to manage a shift of critical reference is to either
a) make an alternate part with new origin where your manager want to place. That will also show the desired insert in reports
b) you can add a dummy zero-sized pad anywhere in the decal, (snap to what you want) and search for (eg) U2.25 to confirm XY
So... The answer to the question is No, there is no way to acquire the properties or snap to drafting elements of a Decal from within Layout. No matter what, you need to open or edit the Decal in some form or another. I don't understand why Decal drafting elements are not available for referencing from within layout. It seems to me that this would be extremely helpful. Thank You to both of you for providing some tips and tricks for getting around this lack of functionality.
