Could someone please tell me if it's possible to copy a part of a schematic and paste it into the same or different schematic preserving assigned Ref Designators in EE2007.7?
Thanks in advance!
Go to setup, settings, advanced, check off "Unique Names on Copy"
Then using the Navigator, RMB on the schematic block, copy
Go to the Navigator, block section of the same or new schematic, and paste.
So it's only possible to copy per sheet, one can't simply copy a part of schematic and paste is preserving RefDes, right?
There is also a CopyCircuit.vbs script from John Dube but Version 2.0 (4 March 2009) doesn't work for me in EE2007.7 and EE2007.8 under Win7 and WinXP
If I make "Copy Circuit" in DxDesigner I get the following error:
Copy the sheet and delete the unnecessary parts...
If the reference designator was manually set at the block level, it can be maintained on a copy. If it is set at the instance level, it will be reset.
I don't understand why would you want the same reference designators? What is the purpose? If it is because a portion of the design was simulated, each part should have a block level reference designator or be named.
We need it for informal design reuse: there is a "golden source" schematic (and appropriate layout) that is copied into different project. Using reusable blocks is an overkill for us as there are not many cases of reuse.
Anyway, copying sheets will work fine, many thanks for your advice.
In many companies it is important to keep ref designators from changing between schematic revisions. For example, if a certain capacitor was C1 in Rev A, and then C99 in Rev B, it gets confusing for people. Also, after deleting a part you generally don't re-use that ref des for a new part either.
I had to releasae a Rev A schematic before I had time to make it look pretty. Now I wanted to shuffle the pages around, and copy and paste circuits from certain pages to other pages where they are more fitting, and now my ref designators are all dissapearing.
It seems like my options are:
I am very surprised that DxDesigner is lacking even basic copy-paste support.
Check your settings: Setup - settings - Advanced - Preserve Packaging info on copy.
Thanks for the answer, that seems to work properly!
As a suggestion, it would be nice if the right-click options had something like "paste" and "paste with refdes."
We're working on it. Can't say when you'll see it we have to consider more than just Ref Designator.
is there a faster way, than doing it over Setup - settings - Advanced - Preserve Packaging info on copy?
I sometimes want to move (cut and paste) some parts to another schematic then want to copy again, than again move. So it is very difficult and time consuming to go to Setup and change the behaviour.
Is there perhaps an automation script where this option can be ticked on and off?
I presume that this setting "Preserve Packaging info on copy" is only available in EE2007.7?
I am using EE7.9.1 and this option does not appear in the advance settings.
Is there anyway I can implement this copy ref des on copy/paste as I have got a lot of circuitry to move from page to page.
Currently I need to convert a schematic which is designed using a heirarchy (blocks etc) into a flat design with just sheets (14 of them). I can create the new sheets, but then I need to move the circuitry including ref desingator and net names etc to the new sheets.
Any thoughts or help as to make this as easy as possible would be good.
As current thought is that is going to be a long process.
One thing that I have noticed is that if the blocks in my heirarchy schematic have got ref designator on the (eg R101) then that part will copy and paste with the ref designator, however if the part on the block is shown as R? then copy/paste loses the ref designator (although it is present on the actual sheet).
Is there any way of forcing the instance values on the schematic pages to the blocks symbols. This would make my task easier, as then I could use copy/paste to move around the parts.
The option should still be there in 7.9.1, it hasn't been removed. There is a second option added for VX to separate cut and copy.
