DXF is the only path I know to AutoCAD. Unfortunately you are correct, Mentor broke a lot of it in V2007 or V9.0 (I skipped 2007 so I'm not sure which one). I used to go Gerber to LinkCAD to DXF but LinkCAD changed too.
I've had good luck with the PDF output through a path unbenownst to me via AutoCAD with the end result in SolidWorks. That looks pretty good.
I've bene experimenting lately with doing everything in PDF in Layout. It works pretty good except for bottom side views; when you mirror the view you mirror the titleblock too. I have an idea up about it:
Please vote for it.
I created a mirrored bottom assy title block sheet so when I create a mirrored PDF of the bottom assy, it reads correctly.
I do the same. I don't like that for the following reasons:
It ties up my last documentation layer. I have to put the titleblock(s) on individual layers so I can use them for multiple prints.
I have to enter the titleblock info twice; that isn't very productive. A 'mirror' button would be much simpler.
